1. Attend a qualifying VMware authorized course.Already a VCP4? There is no course requirement until February 29, 2012.
2. Gain hands-on experience with VMware vSphere 5.
3. Pass the VCP5 Exam.

Mit vSphere 5 hat VMware eine neue Version seines “Cloud-Betriebssystems” vorgestellt. Sie unterstützt virtuelle Maschinen (VM) mit bis zu 32 virtuellen Prozessoren und 1 TByte RAM. Das ist vier Mal so viel wie beim zwei Jahre alten vSphere 4. Die neue vSphere-Ausgabe erledigt 1 Million I/O-Operationen pro Sekunde – etwa 630.000 mehr als ihr Vorgänger.

Das jetzt eingeführte “Auto-Deploy” beschleunigt das Einrichten neuer physischer Host-Systeme. Deren Profile lagern auf einem vCenter-Server und werden auf die Zielsysteme überspielt. Nach Angaben von VMware dauere die Einrichtung von 40 Servern dank Auto Deploy nur zehn Minuten statt wie zuvor 20 Stunden.

Mit “Profile Driven Storage” lässt sich virtuellen Maschinen die passende Speicherkapazität leichter zuzuweisen. Dazu teilt man Storage-Ressourcen im Vorfeld in Leistungsklassen ein. Jede virtuelle Maschine lässt sich anschließend dem Storage-Pool zuweisen, der die geforderten Kriterien erfüllt, beispielsweise kurze Zugriffszeiten. Die Lastverteilungsfunktionen (Load Balancing) wurden um einen “Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler” erweitert. Er verlagert virtuelle Maschinen automatisch auf Speichersysteme mit geringerer Auslastung, bevor es zu Leistungsengpässen kommt.

vSphere soll im dritten Quartal 2011 auf den Markt kommen. Drastische Änderungen gab es beim Lizenzmodell: Statt den Preis anhand der Server-CPUs und des physischen Arbeitsspeichers zu berechnen, wird er nun auf Basis von “vRAM” bestimmt. Dies ist der den virtuellen Maschinen zugeordnete Arbeitsspeicher. Dem Anwender steht es frei, ihn nach Belieben auf einzelne VMs zu verteilen. Die Vorteile laut Hersteller: eine höhere Flexibilität und größere Unabhängigkeit von der Server-Hardware.

VMWare sieht vSphere als “Cloud-Betriebssystem”. De facto handelt es sich um eine Kombination diverser Software-Pakete, mit denen Anwender Server, Speicherkapazität und Applikationen virtualisieren und verwalten können.

Das Bibliographische Institut hat sein Portal Duden.de gründlich überarbeitet und das bislang teilweise kostenpflichtige Angebot komplett frei zugänglich gemacht. Das zentrales Element von Duden.de ist ein Online-Wörterbuch, in welchem Rechtschreibung, Bedeutung, Synonyme, Aussprache und Herkunft von rund 135.000 deutschen Wörtern aufgeführt sind. Weiterhin gibt es Hinweise zur Grammatik und zur korrekten Verwendung von Begriffen. Aus einer Datenbank der ARD sind Vertonungen eingebunden, computergenerierte Wortwolken illustrieren im Zusammenhang häufig verwendete Begrifflichkeiten.

Außerdem bietet Duden.de die Möglichkeit, ganze Texte auf korrekte Rechtschreibung und Grammatik hin zu überprüfen. Dafür muss der Text in eine Eingabemaske kopiert werden, die Rechtschreibprüfung von Websites anhand der URL ist nicht möglich.

heise online – Google führt 2-Faktor-Authentifizierung ein.

Passwörter sind eine kritische Schwachstelle Web-basierter Dienste. Mit einem optionalen 2-Faktor-Login hebt Google das Sicherheitsniveau seiner Plattform auf ein neues Niveau. Google will das Verfahren innerhalb der nächsten Tage allen Google-Nutzern anbieten.

In einem Blog-Beitrag kündigen die Google-Techniker ein neues, optionales Login-Verfahren an, das neben dem Passwort auch noch die Eingabe eines Prüfcodes erfordert. Diesen erzeugt entweder eine Smartphone-App, oder Google schickt ihn via SMS an eine hinterlegte Nummer. Damit sind zwei unabhängige Faktoren für den Login erforderlich: Man muss nicht nur das Passwort wissen, sondern auch noch Zugang zum vorher definierten Handy haben.

Dass sich mit Passwörtern allein eigentlich kein ausreichendes Sicherheitsniveau realisieren lässt, ist seit Längerem bekannt. Knacksichere Passwörter kann man sich nicht merken – jedenfalls nicht in ausreichender Zahl. Und selbst ein 20-stelliges Passwort aus zufälligen Zeichen schützt nicht mehr, wenn man sich auf dem PC einen Trojaner eingefangen hat, der es bei der Eingabe einfach mitliest. Deshalb muss ein zusätzliches Überprüfungsverfahren her, das unabhängig funktioniert.

Bereits vor vier Jahren unternahm eBay einen Vorstoß, gemeinsam mit Tochterunternehmen Paypal zur sicheren Authentifizierung Einmal-Passwörter großflächig einzuführen. Das scheiterte damals vor allem daran, dass man dazu erst mal ein spezielles Token kaufen und dann immer mit sich führen musste. Mit der Verbreitung von Smartphones lassen sich Passcode-Generatoren als Apps realisieren, und die Einstiegshürde wird deutlich niedriger.

Google schätzt den einmaligen Aufwand für die Einrichtung des 2-Faktor-Logins auf etwa 15 Minuten. Hinzu kommt der zusätzliche Aufwand bei jedem einzelnen Login. Den bereits verfügbaren Screenshots ist zu entnehmen, dass Google hier Kompromisse eingehen will und es erlaubt, einen Computer so zu aktivieren, dass man den Prüfcode nur alle 30 Tage eingeben muss. Auch wenn man an der Umsetzung im Laufe der Zeit noch Anpassungen vornehmen muss, signalisiert Google mit diesem Schritt sehr deutlich, dass man das Passwort-Problem jetzt wirklich in Angriff nehmen will.

Resolution
This issue occurs when you have installed one of these Microsoft patches, 2482017 or 2467023.

If you have already installed these patches, you can install VMware View Client (build 353760) or uninstall the Microsoft patches.

If you have not installed these patches, delay the installation of the Microsoft patches until you have installed VMware View Client (build 353760).

VMware View Client build 353760 has been tested on:

* Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit + Internet Explorer 8
* Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit + Internet Explorer 8
* Windows 7 Home 32 bit + Internet Explorer 8

The View Client patch can be downloaded from here. Enter your credentials, accept the EULA and download the appropriate file:

* If you are using Windows 7 32-bit, use VMware-viewclient-4.5.0-353760.exe.
* If you are using Windows 7 64-bit, use VMware-viewclient-x86_64-4.5.0-353760.exe.

Note: If you are using View Client 4.0.x and are experiencing this issue, you can install the appropriate View Client 4.5 for your environment.
Disclaimer: Using Windows 7 with a View Client 4.0.x is not supported, so this information is provided as is, and without testing.

To apply this patch

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
2. Choose the previously installed VMware View Client and click Remove.
3. Navigate to where you downloaded VMware-viewclient-xxx-4.5.0-353760.exe and run the executable file.
4. Follow the installation installation wizard to complete installation.
5. Reboot the computer.

Note: VMware View Clients with build number 353760 or later are not affected by this issue.

We’re often asked why so many Google applications seem to be perpetually in beta. For example, Gmail has worn the beta tag more than five years. We realize this situation puzzles some people, particularly those who subscribe to the traditional definition of “beta” software as not being yet ready for prime time.

Ever since we launched the Google Apps suite for businesses two years ago, it’s had a service level agreement, 24/7 support, and has met or exceeded all the other standards of non-beta software. More than 1.75 million companies around the world run their business on Google Apps, including Google. We’ve come to appreciate that the beta tag just doesn’t fit for large enterprises that aren’t keen to run their business on software that sounds like it’s still in the trial phase. So we’ve focused our efforts on reaching our high bar for taking products out of beta, and all the applications in the Apps suite have now met that mark.

Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Talk — both enterprise and consumer versions — are now out of beta. “Beta” will be removed from the product logos today, but we’ll continue to innovate and improve upon the applications whether or not there’s a small “beta” beneath the logo. Indeed, today we’re also announcing some other Google Apps features that we think will appeal to large enterprises: mail delegation, mail retention and ongoing enhancements to Apps reliability.
